Wetlands: Walk-in trafficway forum draws steady attendance

A steady stream of mostly Haskell Indian Nations University students Saturday afternoon visited Stidham Union to get information about preserving the Baker Wetlands and to express opposition to the proposed South Lawrence Trafficway route.

“This helps, but I don’t think there is any real way to win,” said Gary Dorr, a Haskell junior from Yakima, Wash., as he looked over brochures and other information displayed on a row of tables.

Wetlands supporters also had the chance to write down their thoughts on a proposal that would have the trafficway built through the wetlands on a southern route around Lawrence to connect with Kansas Highway 10.

The comments will be passed on to the Kansas Department of Transportation, said Stan Ross, a member of the Haskell Alumni Assn., which sponsored Saturday’s forum.

The fatality victim was identified by police as Brian Arellano, 22. Two other people who were in the car with him were treated at the scene for minor injuries, Sgt. Mark Warren said. Their names were not available.

Officers were called about 2 a.m. to the area of North Second and Locust streets.

A car, apparently going north on Second Street, went off the street and struck the sidewalk railing near the railroad overpass, Warren said.
