Topeka ? Five Lawrence artists have received fellowships and mini-fellowships from the Kansas Arts Commission.

Lawrence musician Maria Anthony has been awarded a $5,000 Kansas Artist Fellowship for interdisciplinary/performance art.

And the following artists have received $500 mini-fellowships:

l Marla Jackson, quilt artist, craft category

l Kansas University assistant professor of art Yoonmi Nam, two-dimensional visual art

l Lori Hinrichsen, two-dimensional visual art

l Philip Kimball, fiction

The award winners will be honored during a public reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Commerce Bank and Trust, Ninth and Kansas Ave., Topeka.

Anthony is a singer, songwriter, performer, recording artist, historian, storyteller, visual artist, filmmaker, presenter and promoter. Her focus the past 10 years has been on Celtic, especially Scottish music, and her most recent project has been a choral drama about the life and legends of Saint Kentigern of Scotland.

It’s that particular project that the fellowship will help her complete. Though Anthony has staged the drama twice in Lawrence and recorded the most recent performance on CD, she’s ready to get into the studio to record different singers performing individual parts for what eventually will be a DVD package.

The fellowship money will allow Anthony to make a much-anticipated trip to Scotland to record with Alastair McDonald and meet with a promoter in Glasgow who’s interested in the production.

When she found out a few months ago that she had won the fellowship, she began making travel plans.

“We were going to have to wait another year,” she said. “The fellowship has totally facilitated the most challenging part of this project. It’s amazing.”

Other fellowship winners are: Roger D. Garner, Olathe, director for educational programming at Johnson County Community College; Dennis D. Landsman, Overland Park, artistic director of the Kansas Regional Ballet and co-director of the American Dance Center; John Leavitt, Andover, award-winning composer, conductor, teacher, lecturer and church musician with more than 200 published works to his credit; Lori Lee Triplett, Overland Park, adjunct professor of theater at Baker University in Baldwin and president, co-founder and director of Heart of America Performing Arts, a nonprofit performing arts company.

Other mini-fellowship winners are M. Suzanne Ryan, Bonner Springs; Richard W. Jennings, Leawood; Tracy Million Simmons, Dodge City; Dan Glynn, Highland; Roger Pitts, Kansas City; Marie A. Asner, Overland Park; Amy Schmierbach, Hays; and Sherry J. Haar, Manhattan.
