Hall Center to honor faculty authors

A Celebration of Books Thursday will honor Kansas University humanities faculty members who have published books during the past year.

The free public event will be 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. in the Summerfield Room at Adams Alumni Center, 1266 Oread Ave. During the past year, 47 members of the humanities, social sciences and fine arts faculties have published 50 books on topics from the history of Judaism to Latin-American popular music.

Many of the books will be on display during the reception. The celebration also will include a short program in which three faculty authors will read from their books and take audience questions.

Award connects theatre students, actors

Lawrence Community Theatre has received a Good to Great Award from the Self Help Network and the Kansas University Work Group on Health Promotion and Community Development.

The Good to Great Awards were designed to support efforts in Kansas communities to make the state a good place to raise a child. The awards recognized Kansans who made a difference and provided them with funds to cover the material costs of their volunteer efforts.

The theatre received $1,500, which will be used to place members of the Vintage Players, its senior acting troupe, into second grade classes at Deerfield School to do reading and theater activities with students. Through this pilot program, the children will work with the seniors to learn to read out loud with more emotion and also act out portions of the stories they read.

KU Press showcases design contest winners

An exhibition of the winners of the 2002 Association of American University Presses Book, Jacket and Journal Show will be on display Monday through March 17 at the University Press of Kansas, 2501 W. 15th St.

Exhibit hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Each visitor will receive a free copy of the show catalog, which contains design specifications and jurors’ comments.

The 2002 exhibit features 50 books, 20 jackets and covers, and one journal. For judging purposes, the books were divided into four categories: typographic, illustrated, poetry and literature, and reference. Winners were selected from 330 books, 358 jackets and covers, and 12 journals published in 2001 that were submitted by university presses.
