Hoffman

Chuck and Mae Hoffman, Lawrence, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary March 8.

Charles Hoffman and Mae Pippert were married March 8, 1933, at the home of Mae’s parents, John and Dollie Pippert, near Worden.

They have two daughters, Betty Wright and Charlotte Sparkes, both of Lawrence. They also have five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Wulfkuhle

Ross and Margaret Wulfkuhle, Lawrence, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with a reception for family and friends from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 9 at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

Ross Wulfkuhle and Margaret Colman were married March 7, 1943, by Dr. Harold Barr.

After four years of military service in the Aleutian Islands and Calcutta, India, Ross was employed in the audio-visual department at Kansas University until retiring in 1979. He earned Employee of the Year in 1977. He also farmed and raised cattle in the Kanwaka community. Margaret was an elementary school teacher in Douglas and Johnson counties. She later was an audio-visual methods supervisor for Continuing Education at KU.

The couple request no gifts.

Hale

Dick and Nancy Hale, Lawrence, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Feb. 22 with a family dinner at Paisano’s Ristorante and on Feb. 23 with a family brunch at Alvamar Country Club.

Dick and Nancy met as students at Kansas University. Dick graduated from the School of Journalism in 1952.

They were married Feb. 22, 1953, in Nancy’s hometown, Cresco, Iowa.

At that time, Dick was serving as a special agent with the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps.

In 1955 they moved to Cheyenne County, Kansas, where they purchased the Bird City Times. They acquired the St. Francis Herald in 1958 and continued to publish both weekly newspapers until 1974.

The couple moved in 1974 to Lawrence, where Dick joined the staff of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. He was editor of Golf Course Management from 1974 to 1976 and from 1980 to 1982. They lived in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., from 1976 to 1980 while Dick was editor of PGA Magazine.

In 1982 Dick took a position with PennWell Publishing Co. in Tulsa, Okla. He was editor and publisher of Dental Economics, a national monthly business magazine for dentists. He retired in 1997.

They moved back to Lawrence in 2000. They are members of Plymouth Congregational Church, the New Generation Society of Lawrence and Alvamar Country Club.

The couple’s children are Steve and Sharyl Hale, Gardner; Mike and Jerri Hale, Omaha, Neb.; Mike and Kris Shurtz, Lawrence; and Todd and Sarah Wilcher, Lee’s Summit, Mo. They also have eight grandchildren.

Box

Louis and Barbara Box, Eudora, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a family reception March 9.

Louis Box and Barbara Shaver were married March 6, 1953, at Wallula Lutheran Church in Piper.

The couple’s children are Louise Jonas-Tilghman, Overland Park; Joseph Box and Dale Box, both of Linwood, and Kevin Box, Freeman, Mo.

They also have 10 grandchildren.
