Lawrence Legion team wins three of four during weekend junket

Lawrence’s Raiders wrapped up a successful weekend of American Legion baseball by downing Claremore, Okla., 10-8, Sunday.

Matt Berner went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Derek Bailey went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs as the Raiders wrapped up their third victory in four tries on the road trip.

Andrew Pyle and Taylor Martin socked doubles for the Raiders. Tyler Blankenship was the winner in relief of Blake Dickson.

Saturday, the Raiders split a doubleheader with the Bartlesville (Okla.) Cubs, winning the opener 10-1, then losing, 8-4.

Tommy Mangino went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs, while David Arndt had three RBIs off one hit in three at-bats to pace the victory. Aaron Madill and Bailey also had two hits. Dominick Harrell pitched a three-hitter, striking out five and walking one in improving to 3-1.

In the Game Two loss, Berner went 2-for-3 with a home run, while Martin was 2-for-3 with a double.

Friday, the Raiders claimed a 12-1 victory at Chanute. Bailey went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer and four RBIs, plus two stolen bases.

Pyle, Berner, Kyle Unruh and Martin had two hits apiece, Martin clubbing a double and homer with two RBIs. Harrell also homered. Madill pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine and improving to 4-0.

“It was really a successful trip,” Raiders coach Carl Brooks said Sunday. “The only game we lost, we walked 10 and hit one batter. When you do that, you are begging to lose. We had some kids with sensational weekends with the bat.”

Bailey went 8-for-14 with two homers and seven RBIs, while Berner was 8-for-16 with five RBIs. Martin was 6-for-14 with four doubles and a home run.

The Raiders (19-7) will meet Leavenworth at 7 p.m. today at Free State High’s field.
