KU race car to be on display at Kansas Speedway

Kansas University’s student-built Formula SAE race car will be on display this weekend at the Kansas Speedway.

The car will be available for viewing at the Fan Walk area during the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and Indy Racing League events Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Team members will be on hand to talk about their project from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

A team of engineering students completes the project each year. The KU car recently placed 17th out of a field of 140 teams at the Formula SAE competition in Detroit.

Restrictions are placed on the car frame and engine so the students’ knowledge, creativity, and imagination are tested. Four-cycle engines up to 610cc can be turbocharged or supercharged in the competition

The vehicles are judged in three different categories: static inspection and engineering design, solo performance trails, and high-performance track endurance.

The competition is sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
