Yankees mop up Mets

N.Y.'s American League team wins at two stadiums

? Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter led off with consecutive homers and the New York Yankees held off the Mets, 9-8, Saturday night for a sweep of their two-ballpark, day-night doubleheader.

In the first game at Yankee Stadium, Roger Clemens earned his 301st victory, and Hideki Matsui hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs in the Yankees’ 7-1 win.

“Today, their guy got into trouble and Matsui made them pay,” Clemens said.

The Yankees built a 9-0 lead in the nightcap at Shea Stadium, only to see the Mets nearly come all the way back. Raul Gonzalez’s three-run double off Mariano Rivera in the eighth cut it to 9-8, but Gonzalez got caught in a rundown between second and third and was thrown out.

That ended the Mets’ best chance. Rivera struck out Ty Wigginton to get out of the inning and finished for his 13th save in 14 chances.

Brandon Claussen (1-0) allowed two runs — one earned — and pitched into the seventh inning in his major-league debut for the Yankees, who have won six straight.

The Yankees have won all five games against the Mets this year and go for a season sweep today. With three wins at Shea Stadium in 2003, the Yankees completed the first Subway Series sweep by either team since interleague play began in 1997.

The Mets have been swept in four doubleheaders this season.

Claussen, considered the Yankees’ top pitching prospect, was animated on the mound at times but seemed in control throughout — he even drove in a run with his first career hit.

Claussen, who had “Tommy John” surgery on his left elbow last June, allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked one in 61/3 innings — but the bullpen nearly gave away his win.

Wigginton homered off Sterling Hitchcock in the seventh to make it 9-3. In the eighth, Tony Clark hit an RBI double off Hitchcock, Dan Miceli walked Timo Perez and Rivera came on in relief.

Roberto Alomar hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly, and Gonzalez, recalled from Triple-A Norfolk before the second game, sent a drive into the right-center gap to make it 9-8.

White Sox 7, Cubs 6

Chicago — D’Angelo Jimenez hit an RBI single to score Magglio Ordonez as the White Sox beat the Cubs and sent their cross-town rivals to a season-worst fourth straight loss.

Aaron Rowand hit a dramatic two-run homer in the eighth to tie the game at 6, connecting off Antonio Alfonseca. Ordonez was walked by Juan Cruz (1-3) to lead off the ninth and when Carlos Lee flied to right, he raced into second ahead of Sammy Sosa’s throw.

Mike Remlinger replaced Cruz and after striking out Jose Valentin issued an intentional walk to Tony Graffanino. Jimenez, who didn’t start the game and was in a 7-for-41 slump, singled on an 0-1 pitch and Ordonez beat the throw home, setting off another wild celebration at U.S. Cellular Field.

Reds 5, Indians 4

Cleveland — Rookie Rainer Olmedo’s RBI single capped Cincinnati’s two-out, two-run rally in the ninth inning as the Reds defeated Cleveland. Olmedo had four RBIs for the Reds, who have won a major league-leading 20 games in their final at-bat. Cincinnati also has 18 wins by one run, a major-league best.

Yankee pitcher Roger Clemens delivers against the Mets. Clemens earned his 301st career victory with a 7-1 win Saturday at Yankee Stadium. Later, the teams moved to Shea Stadium, where the Yankees won, 9-8.

Expos 4, Blue Jays 2

Toronto — Rookie Claudio Vargas pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning as Montreal beat Toronto. Carlos Delgado hit his major league-leading 26th home run for the Blue Jays.

Astros 2, Rangers 0

Houston — Jeriome Robertson won his fifth straight decision and Adam Everett’s RBI single snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth inning as Houston beat Texas. The Astros snapped a four-game losing streak, equaling their longest of the season, and captured the Silver Boot, which goes to the winner of the annual series between the state rivals.

Giants 8, Athletics 7 (10)

San Francisco — Pedro Feliz singled home the winning run in the 10th inning and Barry Bonds homered as San Francisco rallied from an early six-run deficit to beat Oakland. Neifi Perez tied it with an RBI single in the eighth and scored on Feliz’s hit as the Giants won their second straight in the Bay Bridge Series. With its fifth win in seven games, San Francisco took a 3-2 lead in the series, which concludes today at Pacific Bell Park.

D’backs 7, Tigers 0

Detroit — Rookie Brandon Webb pitched a seven-hitter and Luis Gonzalez drove in three runs as Arizona won its franchise-record 10th straight game. Arizona won nine in a row Aug. 10-19, 2001.

Padres 6, Mariners 0

Seattle — Jake Peavy pitched three-hit ball for eight innings and Rondell White hit a three-run home run as San Diego beat Seattle. Peavy (8-5) won his fourth straight start.

Angels 3, Dodgers 1

Anaheim, Calif. — Kevin Appier pitched six solid innings, and Tim Salmon and Shawn Wooten homered as Anaheim beat Los Angeles. The win before a sellout crowd of 43,726 was the Angels’ third straight over their National League opponent from some 35 miles up the freeway, including Appier’s 6-3 win against Kevin Brown last Sunday at Dodger Stadium.

Twins 5, Brewers 2

Minneapolis — Torii Hunter and Corey Koskie spoiled Dave Burba’s season debut with solo homers and helped Minnesota beat Milwaukee. Hunter went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Luis Rivas went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Twins, who won for just the fourth time in 14 games and the fifth time in their last 15 home games. Scott Podsednik was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Brewers, who lost to Twins starter Kenny Rogers for the second time in six days.

Phillies 9, Orioles 5

Baltimore — Jim Thome homered, doubled and scored two runs as Philadelphia defeated Baltimore before the largest crowd in the 12-year history of Camden Yards. Ricky Ledee and Tomas Perez also homered, and Placido Polanco had four hits and three RBIs to help the Phillies to their seventh win in eight games. The interleague game attracted 49,549 fans — the most ever to see a game at Camden Yards.

Marlins 10, Red Sox 9

Boston — Mike Lowell hit a three-run homer in the ninth as Florida rallied to overcome another big Boston inning. One night after Boston scored a record 10 runs before making an out in a 14-run first inning, the Red Sox took a 9-2 lead with seven runs in the sixth. But the Marlins scored four in the eighth and four more in the ninth to take the lead and snap Boston’s five-game winning streak.

Devil Rays 9, Braves 7

St. Petersburg, Fla. — Damian Rolls drove in three runs to back the pitching of Victor Zambrano as Tampa Bay stopped a four-game losing streak.
