Tom Volek, an adult leader registered with Boy Scout Troop 55, chartered to Westside Presbyterian Church, was named June 14 to the position of Keeper of the Wampum in the tribe of Mic-O-Say, an honorary camping society at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation.

The position is the second of five levels of responsibility for adult leaders. Volek is only the second scout leader from Pelathe District to be selected for this recognition. Volek is serving as director of Camp Lone Star on the Bartle Scout Reservation. He has served two previous terms as camp director and two years as director of the Rotary Camp Program for handicapped Scouts.

  • Boy Scouts and adult advisers of Troop 59, chartered to First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, hiked in the mountains of West Virginia as part of the troop’s annual High Adventure Backpacking Program. The Troop was divided into four crews. Each crew hiked 45 to 50 miles. The troop also toured the Civil War battlefield at Gettysburg, watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery and took a guided tour of the National Mall and monuments in Washington, D.C.

Crew chiefs were Reid Crowe, Wes Norwood, Sam Gleeson and Steve Glasker. Scouts who attended were Chris Bergman, Nathan Billings, Nathan Desetti, Evan Hilpman, Travis Sutheimer, John Armstrong, John Bergman, Ben Chapin, Zach Stites, Sam Sutheimer, Jordan Wright, Nolan Kappelman, Anson Stancliffe, David Stogsdill, Eli Stogsdill, Joe Stogsdill, Alex Anderson, Will Armstrong, Tim Hagen and Jeff Standing.

Adult advisers who accompanied the scouts were Don Crowe, Dean Wilson, Bryce Wilson, Zachary King, Brenda Kappelman, Frank Wright, Brian Norwood, Mark Gleeson, Ben Gleeson, Josh Bailey, Mark Stogsdill, Tripp Anderson, Chris Armstrong, Keith Wood and Michael Glasker.
