Calvary Temple Assembly of God

Haskell Cooley will play gospel music July 6 for Freedom Sunday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace.

Cooley, a pianist, has played for several gospel music groups. His wife and daughter will accompany him.

The church will be decorated with flags to celebrate America’s freedom.

First Church of the Nazarene

Guitarist David Smart will be in concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at First Church of the Nazarene, 1470 N. 1100 Road.

First United Methodist Church

The 8:30 a.m., 9:40 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., will feature a liturgy of welcome for the Rev. Barb Clinger, celebrating her appointment as pastor of senior adults.

Prairie Worship is at 5:30 p.m. Saturdays and 7 p.m. Sundays at the church’s west campus on the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 40 and Kansas Highway 10.

Ninth Street Baptist Church

The Rev. Kenneth Martin and Centennial Baptist Church of Kensett, Ark., will be guests at the 7:45 a.m. Sunday worship service at Ninth Street Baptist Church, 847 Ohio.

The Rev. Larry Johnson and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church of Bald Knob, Ark., will be guests at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship service.

The services will celebrate the church’s 140th anniversary.

Plymouth Congregational Church

A combined 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship service celebrating July Fourth will feature music presented by a brass quintet and percussionist, as well as the chancel choir.

The piano trio of Helen Hawley, Marilyn Epp and Jan Shumway will present a new arrangement, “Our Grand Old Stars and Stripes.”

After the service, the congregation will gather in the parking lot south of the church for hamburgers, hot dogs and music.

There will be no 11:15 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Redeemer Lutheran Church

The Rev. Norm Steffen, retired pastor of University Lutheran Church (1965-1977), will be the guest pastor Sunday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave.

The Rev. Walter Bussert will be the organist.

Worship services are at 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The Rev. Jo-Ann Smith, a candidate for bishop in Kansas, will preside at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services.

The Rev. Judy Graham, guest preacher, will deliver the message.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Sunday’s adult forum at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt., will be a celebration of author Jan Karon and her Mitford book series.

Karon has written seven books about life in the fictional village of Mitford and its rector, Father Tim.

Led by Ruth Turney, the forum begins at 9:30 a.m. in the parish hall.

Unity Church of Lawrence

“A New Look at an Old Book” is the latest four-week class offered at Unity Church of Lawrence, 900 Madeline Lane.

The Rev. Sherry Schultz will examine contemporary Bible scholarship using Bishop John Shelby Spong’s book, “Why Christianity Must Change or Die.”

The class begins at 9:45 a.m. Sunday in Unity’s annex building.

Local Food to Local Kids, an educational program for children ages 10-12, will be held July 7-11 at Unity. Sponsored by Community Mercantile Co-op and the Community Mercantile Education Foundation, the event will feature trips to farms and great food.

The church will have at prayer vigil from 8 a.m. July 12 to 8 a.m. July 13 to celebrate its first anniversary at 900 Madeline Lane.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The summer song service will begin at 10:50 a.m. Sunday at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1024 Kasold Drive.

It will precede the 11 a.m. worship service.

The mission and stewardship committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, and the men’s lunch will be held at noon Thursday at Plum Tree Restaurant, 2620 Iowa.
