  • Mike and Cinde Folks, O’Fallon, Mo., announce the birth of a daughter, Ashleigh Marie Folks, born June 18, 2003, at Barnes Jewish St. Peters Hospital in St. Peters, Mo.   • Derk and Dana Landes, Kansas City, Mo., announce the birth of their son, Raef Michael Landes, born May 11, 2003, at St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Mo.   • Jeremy and Kelly Brakenhoff, Lawrence, announce the birth of a son Abel Andrew Brakenhoff, born June 13, 2003, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He has a brother, Jeth Brakenhoff, 6, and a sister, Naomi Brakenhoff, 3. Grandparents are Darrell and Barb Harkness, Council Grove, and Larry and Kathy Brakenhoff, Alta Vista. Great-grandparents are Milan and Mildred Harkness and Beatrice Kreger.
  • Kali Conrad and Grace Daniels, students at Central Junior High School, were among 25 girls who recently visited Emporia State University for “Mathematics and Science to Explore Careers: Investigating Together.” It is a program that begins with a one-week summer residential program at ESU, followed by four Saturday activities throughout the school year.
  • Alex Head recently was named a Pomona College Scholar in recognition of his high academic achievement at Pomona College, Claremont, Calif. Head, a 2001 graduate of Free State High School, completed his sophomore year at Pomona College in May. He plans to continue his studies next semester at the University of Melbourne in Australia under a study abroad program. He then will return to Pomona College, where he is majoring in economics and English and throws javelin for the track team. He is the son of Lucia Orth and John Head, of Lawrence.
  • Descendants of William A. and Margaret A. Pine had their 45th annual reunion June 15 at the Holcom Recreation Center. About 70 family members and guests gathered for a covered-dish dinner. The Roscoe Pine family served as hosts.

Norman and Norma Leary, descendants of Ed and Olive Pine, were special guests.

  • Melinda Zilliox graduated magna cum laude from Washburn University in May with a bachelor of science in criminal justice. She is a probation officer with Douglas County. She is the daughter of Rose and Mike Hadl, Lawrence, and Brad Zilliox, Lawrence. She is the granddaughter of Josphine and Thomas Ramirez Sr., Lawrence, and Phyllis and Rawleigh Zilliox, Lawrence. Her great-grandmother is Theodora Vega, Lawrence.
  • Silvy Perkins, Lawrence, made the dean’s academic list of distinguished students for the 2003 spring semester at John Brown University, Siloam Springs, Ark. She is the daughter of Brian Perkins and Betty Peterson, Lawrence.
  • The American Indian College Fund announced that 18 Haskell Indian Nations University students received scholarships from AT&T and the American Indian College Fund. The scholarships were effective with the fall 2002 term and were only recently announced. Recipients from Lawrence were Harold Brandt, Demitre Coppock, Mike Tahdooanippah, Janet White and Melissa Yellow.
  • Paul Epp, Marona Graham-Bailey and Bria DeSalvo, all of Lawrence, made the spring 2003 dean’s list for Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn.
  • Cy McCormack, Lawrence, graduated May 24 from Tabor College, Hillsboro, receiving a bachelor of science in management and organizational development.

  • Alison Lomas, Lawrence, was among 40 high school students who received Hy-Vee Inc. scholarships. She received the $1,000 scholarship for academic achievements and demonstrated interest in school and community activities. She works at the Hy-Vee on West Sixth Street.
  • Morgan Sayler, a Kansas University student, was among 40 college students who received Hy-Vee Inc. scholarships. She received the $1,000 scholarship for academic achievements and demonstrated interest in school and community activities. Sayler works at the Hy-Vee on Clinton Parkway.
  • Geoffrey Washburn, Lawrence, made the spring 2003 dean’s list at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., by earning at least a 3.4 grade-point average.
  • Matapony Collette, Lecompton, made the honorable mention honor roll during the spring 2003 semester at McPherson College, by earning a 3.25 to 3.54 grade-point average.
  • Allen County Community College, Iola, announced area students who made the honor roll during the spring 2003 semester. Students who made the 4.0 grade-point average honor roll were: Michael Blood II and Ray Thompson, Overbrook; and Becky Kirkwood, Tecumseh. Amanda Henry, Baldwin; Dan Harmon, Ozawkie; and Russell Slaugh, Lawrence, were named to the president’s honor roll by earning a 3.9 to 4.0 grade-point average.
  • Sarah Shapiro, Lawrence, was named to the spring 2003 merit list at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, by earning at least a 3.45 grade-point average. She is the daughter of Joyce and Sidney Shapiro.
  • Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Mo., named nine student-athletes to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Assn. presidential scholars list. Among those named were softball player Sissy Fletcher, De Soto, and volleyball player Trudy Carter, Overbrook. These student athletes gained distinction by maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average and by completing at least two terms.
  • Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, announced area students who made the spring 2003 honor roll lists.
