KU tuition to increase 20.7 percent

Kansas University students will see another tuition increase this fall — the Kansas Board of Regents approved a 20.7 percent boost on Thursday for most students.

Regents also increased the salary of KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway to more than $272,000, using state dollars and newly announced private funds.

Action came Thursday during the board’s monthly meeting.

Regents unanimously approved increasing the tuition rate by 20.7 percent for the upcoming academic year. For a resident undergraduate taking 15 hours, tuition will be $1,763.25 for the fall 2003 semester.

Regents also approved a 1.5 percent increase in salary for KU Chancellor Robert Hemenway, bringing his salary to $222,711.

In addition, Hemenway will get about $50,000 more, thanks to a donation from a KU graduate, regents announced.

Charles Oswald, a KU alumnus from Edina, Minn., donated $1 million to the endowment foundations at KU, Kansas State University and Wichita State University to supplement the chancellors’ and presidents’ salaries.

The funds allow the foundations to provide an extra $50,000 per year on the leaders of those schools.
