Hot, muggy conditions follow morning showers

Lawrence was splashed by another heavy round of rain Monday morning, bringing the total for the last two days to well over two inches. And the muggy conditions that followed have pushed the heat index up to triple digits.

“That’s the real story,” said Ross Janssen, 6News meteorologist. Temperatures had reached close to 90 degrees by late afternoon. And the heat index was approaching 100, he said.

Although an earlier forecast had anticipated a chance for more showers during the afternoon, Janssen said that was no longer likely for the evening.

The rain gauge at the Lawrence Municipal Airport showed that by 9:54 a.m. Monday, 2.32 inches of rain had fallen since midday on Sunday. A fast-moving storm system that rolled through Lawrence on Monday morning brought 0.62 of an inch.

The city isn’t expected to get a lot of relief from Monday afternoon’s muggy conditions. Overnight temperatures were to drop down to 74 degrees.

More heat is in the forecast for Tuesday, with the high expected at 93.

Janssen says more rain is on the way — his forecast for Wednesday calls for a 50 percent chance of rain during the day and on Wednesday night.

“It’s looking pretty likely now,” Janssen said. “Thursday and Friday look to be pretty nice days, with temperatures back in the low 80s.”
