Scouting news

Members of Boy Scout Troop 55, chartered to Westside Presbyterian Church, recently attended Sea Base in the Florida Keys. The Scouts spent a week on an island off the coast of Florida, snorkeling, deep sea fishing and battling insects. Scouts who attended were Micah Clark, Oliver Devlin, Bryant Denning, Matt James, Willy Frick and Grady Walker. They were accompanied by John Frick and Greg Walker, adult leaders.

Members of Troop 55 also recently attended Order of the Arrow induction weekend at Camp Naish, near Bonner Springs. Grady Walker became an Ordeal Member. Matt Avila, Logan Marienau, Andrew Sigler and Ben Vogel advanced to Brotherhood. Adult leader George Vogel became an Ordeal member, and adult leaders Annelee Marsh and Mark Avila advanced to Brotherhood status. The Order of the Arrow is a national honorary camping society of the Boy Scouts of America.

  • Members of Cub Scout Pack 3059, chartered to First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence, participated in the Cub Scout Day Camp program June 9-13 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Cubs who attended were Barkley Edison, Philip Gabler, Bryce Griffith, Joshua Seybert, Tyler Yocum-Wulfkuhle, Caelan Golledge, Darren Rawlings, Brandon Botkin, Nathan Kappelman, Ben Lawson, Corbin Robinson, Drew Sheppard, Ryan Walter, J.D. Auld, Ludwig Johanning, Ulrich Johanning, Ben Seybert, Adam Wangler, Chance Barritt, Daniel Clausing, Alex Glanzman, Kyler Kenricks, Elliot Klopp, Jackson Mercer and Randy Walter. Adults who attended were Angela Seybert, Russ Seybert, Bruce Johanning, Christina Barritt, Jennifer Klopp, Clay Kappelman, Chris Golledge, Paul Gabler, Deb Rawlings, Chris Griffith, Denise Edison and Shirley Sheppard. Colin Kappelman, of Troop 59, served as den chief for the event.
  • Members of Cub Scout Pack 3051, chartered to Pinckney School, participated in the Cub Scout Day Camp program June 9-13 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Those who attended were Dakota Zinn, Diamond Brockway, Grant Stone, Austin Garner, Mason Robinson, Johnathan Roberts, Nilo Pena, Zachary Curran, Ian Gent, Jamie Braden, Spencer Wilson, Christopher Sloan, Michael Robinson and William Gibson. The following adults served as walking leaders for the boys: Cammie Braden, Linda Sloan, Bob Gent, Bob Garner, Kim Zinn and Kim Davis-Aldridge. Stephen Roberts and Harold Aiken served on the camp staff. Rod Zinn was activities coordinator.

  • Boy Scout Troop 53, chartered to First Christian Church, Lawrence, had a Court of Honor on June 2. Thirty-one Scouts advanced in rank or earned merit badges.

The following boys advanced in rank: John Chumbley, Tenderfoot; Jonathan King, Second Class; Stephen May, Zach Schmidt and Chance Steele, First Class; Michael Bennett, Star; and Alex Webster, Life.

Scouts who received merit badges were Michael Bennett, Chris Berger, Joey Berger, Nick Chance, John Chumbley, Joey Cunningham, Danny DeLaTorre, Zach Guy, Aaron Ideus, Nathan Ideus, Jonathan King, Bob Larrabee, Hamilton Lewis, Morgan Lottes, Stephen May, Alek McElroy, Evan Mielke, Jacob Nissen, Justin Saathoff, Andrew Schmidt, Scott Shreders, Julian Spangler, Chance Steele, Chaz Steele, Brian Teefey, David Teefey, Ethan Yocum, Brett Yulich and Jordan Yulich.

The Troop also recognized the following Scouts who attended Florida Sea Base: Chris Berger, Mitchell Grant, Michael Hurtig, Aaron Ideus, Jimmy Kelley, Bob Larrabee, Hamilton Lewis, Scott Shreders, Julian Spangler and Collin Watgen.

New members and members who advanced in the Order of the Arrow also were recognized. New Ordeal members included Alex Webster, Brian Teefey, David Teefey, Jimmy Kelley, Scott Shreders, Tim Muetz and adult leader Eric Muetz. Scouts who advanced to Brotherhood were Aaron Ideus, Hamilton Lewis, Julian Spangler, Chris Berger, Robert Larrabee and adult leaders Craig Grant and George Lottes.

  • Members of Cub Scout Pack 3370, chartered to the Deerfield School PTA, participated in the Cub Scout Day Camp program June 9-13 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Those who attended were John Bennett, Blair Bracciano, Logan Cherland, Hunter Dedloff, Michael Edman, Stephen Fulton, Alexander Houston, Aaron Simon, Matthew Thompson and Lucas Werner.

Nicollette Bennett served as camp coordinator for the pack. The following parents assisted the Scouts as walking leaders: Ryan Cherland, Don Edman, Michael Thompson, Clark Fulton, Margaret Townsend, Wayne Dedloff, Dina Bracciano, Brad Simon, Lisa Werner and Sherri Dedloff.
