  • Tara May, the daughter of Jerry and Jane May of Lawrence, received a master’s degree from Harvard Divinity School, where she studied ethics and economics. Tara, who lives in Cambridge, Mass., plans to return to Washington, D.C., to pursue a career promoting corporate citizenship. Tara is a 1987 graduate of Lawrence High School and a 1991 graduate of Kansas University.
  • Wave Shaver, a resident at Presbyterian Manor in Lawrence, will celebrate her 93rd birthday with a party at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. The Ladies Southside Bible class from Southside Church of Christ will give the party.
  • Lauren Wright, Lawrence, was named a Cardinal Scholar Athlete by William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo. She is the daughter of Craig and Marilyn Wright.
  • Roxanna Vangemeren, Lawrence, has received a C.A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation Scholar grant from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash. The grant is given to allow undergraduates to conduct research in a chosen field of study.

Vangemeren’s research project is titled “Raising Awareness About Bioinvasion Through Environmental Sculpture Installations.”

  • Theresa Marie Gagnon, Lawrence, was named to the 2003 winter semester dean’s list at the University of Missouri-Kansas City by ranking in the top 10 percent of her class.
  • The descendants of George and Dora Markley will have their 32nd family reunion on Sunday at the Wingert’s building, 693 E. 1250 Road. The Robert Markley family will be host to a covered-dish dinner, which begins at 1 p.m.
  • James Dilling, Jon Corkins, Mark Jongman-Sereno and Ryan Chaney, all of Lawrence, recently attended Level 1 of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. The weeklong program incorporates actual astronaut training with briefings on subjects ranging from how the body reacts to spaceflights to principles of rocketry.

James is the son of George Dilling, Lawrence. Jon Corkins is the son of Bob and Nancy Corkins. Mark is the son of Allard Jongman and Joan Sereno. Ryan is the son of Kevin Chaney.

  • The Houk reunion was June 8 at the home of Wayne and Ethel May Wulfkuhle in Tecumseh.   • Matt Heffner, a 1995 graduate of Lawrence High School, earned a juris doctorate May 18 from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. He is the son of Mike and Donna Heffner.
  • Phoebe Brow and Emily Loewen, both Free State High School graduates, received scholarships from Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa. Brow received the Academic and Community Enrichment Scholarship, and Loewen received the Trustee Scholarship.
  • Jonathan Hunton, Lawrence, and Matt Krause, Tonganoxie, graduated in May from Hutchinson Community College.
  • Kevin Williams, Lawrence, was named to spring 2003 president’s honor roll at Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, by earning at least a 3.75 grade-point average.
  • Sarah McCullough, Lawrence, was named to the spring 2003 dean’s honor roll at Abilene Christian University, Abilene, Texas, by earning at least a 3.45 grade-point average.
