Eudora City Council takes new look at pool

The Eudora City Council on Monday will consider a second try at passing a sales tax for the construction of a new city pool.

Residents voted 484 to 406 in April against issuing bonds for the proposed $2.5 million facility. But they voted 509 to 375 in favor of a half-cent sales tax to help pay for those bonds.

Without approval of the bonds, however, officials said the sales tax would not be enacted.

The new proposal would be for a $2.25 million pool. In addition to the half-cent sales tax, the facility would be paid for with a 3-mill property tax increase — an increase of roughly $38 a year for the owner of a $100,000 house.

The Eudora City Council will discuss the proposed special election at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Eudora City Hall. The election would be held Aug. 26.

Accomplice enters plea to charges in slaying

A defendant charged in connection with the murder of a 21-year-old Lawrence man earlier this year has reached a plea agreement with the state.

Randy R. Owens, 27, Topeka, pleaded no contest Thursday to one count of aiding a felon and one count of fleeing to elude a law-enforcement officer. The state dropped one count of aiding a felon and one count of obstruction as part of the agreement.

Prosecutors allege that after the March 14 shooting death of Quincy Sanders at a duplex in the 2600 block of Ridge Court, Owens helped the two Topeka men charged with killing Sanders: Corey Terrell Robinson, 23, and Tremain V. Scott, 21.

Scott and Robinson are scheduled to appear this morning in Douglas County District Court for a preliminary hearing.

Seventh home intrusion reported to authorities

Police are investigating a seventh case in which a woman reported she awoke to find a man she doesn’t know in her bedroom.

The alleged intrusion happened about 3 a.m. June 9 at an apartment in the 2500 block of West 31st Street. The woman didn’t report it until Monday, and the report wasn’t made available publicly until Thursday.

The 20-year-old woman told police she woke up to find a man sitting on her bed. He addressed her with another woman’s name, then left quickly after being confronted.

According to prior police reports, the similar events occurred at two other apartments that morning in the same complex, Jefferson Commons.

Other, similar, intrusions have been reported since June 1 in the 2700 block of Crestline Drive, the 1100 block of Louisiana Street, and the 1100 block of Tennessee Street.

KU administrator named ‘Latina you should know’

Janet Murguia, executive vice chancellor for university relations at Kansas University, has been named one of 100 “Latinas you should know” by Hispanic Magazine.

Murguia, who has been at KU two years, is a former White House aide under President Clinton, and worked on Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign.

This year’s Leading Latinas, according to the magazine, are U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Maria I. Cribbs, astronaut Ellen Ochoa, motivational author Yasmin Davidds, singer Thalia and Mercedes Viana, director of specialty media for the White House.
