Best Buy warns of e-mail fraud

An e-mail warning of unauthorized orders placed Wednesday on Best Buy’s “official” Web site itself is a hoax, the company said.

The e-mail — sent under a heading such as “BestBuy Order #1095619. Fraud Alert” — warns the recipient that the company had “received an order made by using your personal credit card information. …

“Our Fraud Department has some suspicions regarding this order and we need you to visit a special Fraud Department page at our Web store where you can confirm or decline this transaction by providing us with the correct information.”

Don’t do it, the company advises.

In a recording on its customer service line, Best Buy said it was investigating the source of the hoax.

“We urge you not to provide information,” the company said.

People who already sent information should contact their bank or credit card company, Best Buy said.

City gives nod to land-use plan

Lawrence city commissioners Tuesday night took steps to ensure that traffic control devices are instituted along any future completion of Folks Road.

At the same time, commissioners approved a land-use plan for the area southwest of Sixth Street and Folks Road.

Much of the area will be reserved for low-density residential housing with some medium-density residential areas. An office area was approved along Sixth Street west of Folks Road.

It is expected that eventually Folks Road will be extended south of Sixth Street. Commissioners said any future extension should have traffic controls established concurrently with the traffic calming device on Harvard Road.
