Group seeks volunteers to help promote clean waterways

The city of Lawrence and Kansas Streamlink are teaming up to make Kansas rivers cleaner. The groups need volunteers to glue plastic decals that say “No dumping, drains to river” on storm drains around the city. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m., June 28, in “Dad” Perry Park, Harvard Road and Monterey Way, for Stormwater Extravaganza, where information booths, displays and activities will be set up. Organizers will assign volunteer groups to neighborhoods and distribute maps. From 10 a.m. to noon volunteers will go in groups of three to five to apply the decals and place door-hangers on residences. The decals and hangers encourage residents to keep rivers clean by not dumping pollutants such as oil or paint into drains. Supplies will be provided and each volunteer receives a free T-shirt. Volunteers should call in advance so planners know how many supplies to bring.

Last week’s results

Trinity Respite Care had several calls from people interested in creating a Web site for the organization. Steve Carrier said he had found qualified applicants and did not need any more volunteers for that project.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • The 12th annual “Casa for CASA” fund-raiser to benefit Douglas County Court-Appointed Special Advocates needs volunteers. “Casa for CASA” raises money by raffling a custom-built playhouse. Volunteers are needed to sit with the playhouse and sell tickets for $1 each on July 11 at an opening reception, then on July 18, 19 and 20 at Wal-Mart. Interested volunteers should call Sarah Hill-Nelson at 640-9402.
  • Help Lawrence Habitat for Humanity build homes by recycling. Volunteers can collect aluminum cans or start a can collection site in their workplace, school or church, and then return the collected cans to specific Habitat locations to be tallied for a citywide total. The Lawrence Habitat may earn up to $50,000 from Habitat International and the Aluminum Assn. for collecting the most cans before the end of the year. Contact the Habitat for Humanity office at 832-0777 for more information.
  • Saturday is National Join Hands Day, when adults and youths join hands to volunteer together to make a difference in their community. Anyone with a youth group or adult organization may call the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, 865-5030, for information on participating.
