Lawrence’s Renegades enjoyed an easy doubleheader sweep of Olathe East Saturday at Ice Field, winning their third and fourth straight games and improving to 6-6.

The Renegades rolled over the Hawks, 10-0, in the first game, followed by an 8-0 win in the nightcap. Both games were ended early due to the mercy rule; the Renegades pounded out nine hits in the first game and eight hits in the second.

Renegades coach Lynn Harrod, whose squad had been struggling offensively, said the improvement was all about attitude.

“We took a batting practice before the (first) game,” Harrod said. “There’s been a little disbelief to this team about our approach to batting practice. But they’re starting to believe in it. Tonight was indicative of that.

“You can’t carry a negative approach to the game. We’ve had a lot of negativity at the plate. If you approach the plate without a positive attitude, you’re not gonna have positive results. They didn’t do that tonight.”

Lawrence ripped the first game open in the second inning, scoring eight runs on six hits. First baseman John Parker and catcher Carl Lisher each doubled during the surge, and the Hawks (1-7) helped the Renegades with three errors.

Lisher was one of two Renegades who went 3-for-3, finishing with two doubles and a single.

“It feels good,” Lisher said. “We’re starting to hit the ball a lot better.”

Left fielder Courtney Hutchison went 2-for-3, tallying a run, an RBI and a double.

Renegades pitcher Seth Johnson muted the Hawks, allowing just one hit while striking out seven.

Johnson said he appreciated the run support.

“It’s a lot easier to pitch when the team’s hitting the ball,” he said. “Everyone’s starting to come around now. We’re starting to play like we did last year.”

In the second game, Lawrence picked up two runs in both the second and third innings before a four-run fifth sealed the win. Three Renegades had doubles in the inning: Ryan Engel, Cal Heinrich and Ryne Jackson.

“We haven’t played like a great team,” Harrod said. “I think we have possibility of being a very good team. We’re starting to see that.”

The Renegades play the Wichita Gators Tuesday at Eudora.

Raiders take two

Omaha, Neb. — Taylor Martin pitched the Raiders to one win, and Derek Bailey hit the Raiders to another as the Lawrence baseball team beat Papillion, Neb., 4-3, and Creighton Prep, 9-8 in nine innings, Saturday at the American Legion College World Series.

Martin pitched a complete-game six-hitter against Papillion. Bailey was 4-for-4 with four RBIs, a triple and a homer against Creighton Prep.

The Raiders, 13-2 overall and 3-1 in the tournament, will play their final tourney game at 10 this morning against Roncalli.
