Jayhawk signee deemed Arizona’s top prep player

Kansas University signee Kassie Humphreys has been named Arizona’s high school softball player of the year by the Arizona Republic newspaper.

Humphreys, a 5-foot-11 right-handed pitcher, led Glendale Cactus High to the Arizona large-school championship.

Humphreys posted a 23-1 record and an 0.17 earned-run average in her senior season. She was the winning pitcher in all four of Cactus’ playoff victories, including a 1-0 win over Lake Havasu in which she struck out 32 batters in 17 innings over two days.

Humphreys finished with 249 strikeouts in 1632/3 innings while giving just four earned runs all season.

She will head to Lawrence as Cactus’ career leader in wins (64), strikeouts (606) and complete games (70).

Humphreys played first base when she wasn’t pitching and compiled a .324 batting average.
