State agents hit historic downtown hotel for back taxes

Agents with the Kansas Department of Revenue entered Downtown Lawrence’s Eldridge Hotel Wednesday evening to collect unpaid sales taxes from the business.

Rob Phillips, general manager of the hotel, confirmed that agents entered the business and he paid money to partially satisfy an unpaid tax bill. Phillips declined to say how much money he owed the state, but also said he was behind in property taxes owed to the county.

The business remains open, but Phillips said the 48-room hotel is in jeopardy of closing if the business can’t work out a deal with city officials to improve parking access around the hotel. Phillips said he would seek such a deal in the next few weeks with the city commission.
