T-Bones devour Explorers

Kansas City offense rolls in 13-2 rout of Sioux City

? The weekend had been all about firsts for the Kansas City T-Bones as they broke in their new digs at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Friday night was the first game. Saturday night was the first home win, a 7-6 decision. And Sunday was the first rout — the T-Bones cruised to a 13-2 Northern League victory over the Sioux City Explorers.

The T-Bones racked up a season-high 17 hits in an offensive extravaganza, proving there’s no place like home — or, in Kansas City’s case, a brand-new home with fans breathing new life into a ballclub that previously had played 13 consecutive road games. The T-Bones had lost five games in a row before Saturday’s win.

“I can’t ask for more than that, but the guys played just as hard when they lost,” T-Bones manager Al Gallagher said. “We were just out of gas.”

After Friday’s 1-0 loss, Kansas City seems to have a full tank, fueled by the enthusiasm of the T-Bone faithful.

“We have just been battling. We’re not doing anything different. We’ve just been more relaxed,” second baseman Taber Maier said. “It definitely makes it easier playing here than on the road. You elevate your game when you’re at home.”

A prime example came in the third inning, when it seemed the T-Bones were playing Tee Ball with the Explorers. Eight batters registered at least one hit.

With two outs, Maier hit a bloop single to shallow center field. His single ignited K.C., which finished with six runs off seven hits after Maier flied out in his second at bat of the inning.

Shortstop Jack Jones, after hitting the first home run at the new park Saturday, came a couple of feet short of sending the ball over the left-field wall Sunday.

There was also plenty of frenzied action on the field in promotions and sideline contests.

Kansas City found some more two-out magic in the fifth, scoring four runs off five singles. After the final out was made, the T-Bones’ scoreboard was full. Every batter had a least one hit and one run scored, with six players coming away with multi-hit showings and four T-Bones scoring twice.

At points in the game, especially during the third inning, it was hard to tell who was having a better time at the game: the players or the fans.

“There’s no other better feeling when the crowd is behind you,” said first baseman Ray Brown, who went 3-for-5 with three singles.

Luckily for Brown and company, the T-Bones have six more home games before going back on the road. They start a three-game series with Fargo-Moorhead today.
