Menninger at a glance

The Menninger psychiatric clinic operates a 150-bed hospital on a 14-acre campus in Houston, having moved from a 50-acre campus in west Topeka.

The clinic is partners with the Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital system. Menninger staffers are serving as faculty at Baylor.

Menninger specializes in treating mood disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychotic disorders, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Menninger estimates it has treated 250,000 patients in 78 years and trained 3,000 psychiatrists working in 34 nations.

It was founded by Dr. C.F. Menninger and sons Karl and Will in 1925. With a $20,000 mortgage, they purchased a 20-acre farm on the outskirts of Topeka and converted the farmhouse into a 13-bed clinic.

In 1946, the Menninger School of Psychiatry opened, and within a year, a third of the nation’s psychiatrists in training had enrolled.
