4-H and FCE news

During the Kanwaka 4-H Club’s May meeting, Serria Dickson and P.J. Butenbender led the club in singing “Jingle Bells.” Members answered roll call by saying what they would do on the last day of school. Jason McCandless read the minutes from the last meeting.

The club decided to help beautify Township Hall by putting flowers and mulch on the east side of the building and to have a picnic afterward. It was announced there would be a livestock and horticulture judging camp this summer. Members were reminded to sign up to work at the concession stand during the Douglas County Free Fair.

P.J. Butenbender gave a presentation on raising geese. Joanna Wakeman showed members how to make Rice Krispie treats. For recreation, members participated in a three-legged race.

The Crackerjacks 4-H Club met May 14 in the McLouth School cafeteria. The meeting was called to order by Jeni Newman, junior president.

The flag salute, 4-H pledge and motto were recited. Roll call was answered by 37 members who named their favorite flower. Minutes of the April meeting were read by Amanda Cain, junior secretary. Kylie Campbell, junior treasurer, gave the treasurer’s report. Terri Stewart and Kelsey Campbell led the group in singing, including the “Happy Birthday” song for members who celebrated May birthdays.

The fund-raising committee decided to help provide food during the annual BBQ Blowout. Each family is to bring two fruit pies and a 2-liter of root beer. The Exploring 4-H group gave an illustrated talk using cards. Jamie Cain and Olivia Evans taught members how to make pin cushions. Marc Walbridge, Kylie Campbell and Brad Kabus gave pop talks. Refreshments were provided by the Holwick, Courtney and Deeken families.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The meeting will have a Hawaiian theme.

Kanwaka FCE will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Reba Bennett. Aliene Bieber will give the lesson on how to make a fabric coil basket.

India FCE will meet at 11:20 a.m. Thursday in the northeast corner of Checkers Foods parking lot, 2300 La. The club will visit the Lecompton Museum.
