Royals pitchers shut down Dodgers

? Rookie Kyle Snyder combined on a three-hitter for his first major-league victory, and Carlos Beltran and Angel Berroa homered as the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1, Wednesday night.

The win was just the fifth in 20 games for the Royals, who evened their record at 28-28 one day after dropping below .500 for the first time this season.

Los Angeles lost for the sixth time in eight games following its season-high 10-game winning streak.

The 6-foot-8 Snyder (1-3), the tallest player in Royals’ history, allowed one run and three hits in six innings.

Jason Grimsley pitched two perfect innings with four strikeouts, and rookie Mike MacDougal pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save in 17 chances. Los Angeles had just three baserunners.

Beltran hit his 10th homer with one out in the second off Hideo Nomo (6-6), and Berroa opened the fifth with his second homer in as many games.

Dave Roberts beat out a grounder wide of first with two outs in the sixth to become just the second Los Angeles runner, and Paul Lo Duca followed with an RBI double.

Kansas City's Carlos Beltran finds a receptive dugout after he hit a solo home run in the first inning. The Royals beat the Dodgers, 2-1, Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Snyder retired the first 10 batters before Lo Duca got an infield hit with one out in the fourth, extending his career-high hitting streak to 13 games. Snyder retired the next seven batters before Roberts’ hit.

Nomo allowed two runs and seven hits in eight innings while striking out a season-high nine.

Notes: Royals manager Tony Pena turned 46 Wednesday. … Kansas City’s Mike Sweeney had two singles, a day after going hitless in four at-bats. He had reached base safely in 33 straight games and has now reached in 47 of 50 games this season. … Playing at an NL park means a seat on the bench for Royals rookie Ken Harvey, who usually serves as the DH or plays first base with Sweeney as the DH.
