Comets win without Cooper

? Sheryl Swoopes had her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds as the Houston Comets beat the Phoenix Mercury, 66-51, Tuesday night.

Tina Thompson added 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting, helping the Comets (3-2) avoid their first three-game losing streak in team history. Two of their three wins this season have come against the Mercury.

Cynthia Cooper watched her teammates win from the bench with a right shoulder injury. Cooper, the WNBA’s oldest player at 40, tore her right rotator cuff in practice Monday and will miss at least two weeks.

Tamicha Jackson and Plenette Pierson each scored nine points for the Mercury (1-4), who have lost two in a row.

Michelle Snow added eight points and nine rebounds for the Comets.

Storm 70, Monarchs 56

Seattle — Lauren Jackson scored 22 points and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds as Seattle won its first game of the season. The Storm (1-3) led 32-31 at halftime, but started the second half on a 14-0 run. Sacramento (2-2) wasn’t able to come back and shot just 28.1 percent from the floor for the game. Center Yolanda Griffith picked up her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The victory marks only the second time the Storm have beaten the Monarchs in the regular season. With the outcome, Detroit is the only team in the league without a victory.
