Price, Pyle named to all-state squads

Free State’s Ryne Price and Eudora’s Andrew Pyle have earned first-team all-state berths from the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches. Price was chosen as the catcher on the All-Class 6A team while Pyle was the shortstop on the All-Class 4A team.

Free State pitcher Matt Lane, second baseman Robbie Price and shortstop Matt Berner were named to the Class 6A second team.

Red Dog Days sessions scheduled

Red Dog Days, Lawrence’s annual summer community conditioning program, will begin a week from today. Don “Red Dog” Gardner, the retired Lawrence police officer who started the exercises 20 years ago, will follow the customary June and July schedules.

During June, sessions will be at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Memorial Stadium. Also, starting June 14, Saturday runs will begin near the Lied Center overpass bridge. In July, sessions are set for noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with a third session at 6 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, also at the stadium. The Saturday runs will also continue through July.

Legends triumph

Shawnee — The Lawrence Legends softball team won the U-18 USSSA qualifier tournament Sunday at the Johnson County Girls Athletic Complex. The Legends went 7-1 in the two-day tournament, beating the Bonner Springs Thrillers 3-0 and 5-4 in the double elimination championship. Felicia Freeman pitched 18 innings and allowed seven earned runs.
