Chicago Board of Trade

Soybean futures fell to nearly five-week lows Monday on the Chicago Board of Trade, pressured by good planting weather in the Midwest and other factors.

Corn and wheat also declined.

Beneficial crop conditions were the primary issue weighing on soybean prices, but not the only one. The improved U.S. dollar, poor export inspections and technical weakness also contributed to heavy selling.

Corn also headed lower — albeit not as sharply — due to the crop progress. Farmers are now thought to have planted about 95 percent of this year’s crop.

Wheat sank under pressure from the slides in the neighboring agricultural commodities.

Wheat for July delivery fell 5 1/2 cents to $3.18 3/4 a bushel; July corn fell 2 3/4 cents to $2.41 1/2 a bushel; July oats fell 5 cents to $1.42 3/4 a bushel; July soybeans fell 12 cents to $6.12 1/2 a bushel.

Beef futures advanced while pork futures settled mixed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

July live cattle rose 1.35 cent to 72.45 cents a pound; August feeder cattle rose 1.37 cent to 86.67 cents a pound; July lean hogs finished unchanged at 67.52 cents a pound; July pork bellies fell .05 cent to 96.20 cents a pound.
