Raiders take two from Olathe South

? Lawrence’s Raiders defeated Olathe South, 11-6 and 8-2, in a season-opening American Legion baseball doubleheader Sunday.

“It was a really good start,” Raiders manager Carl Brooks said. “We have a 17-man roster and played 16 guys. No matter who was on the field looked good. I look forward to a wonderful summer.”

In the first game, Derek Bailey, Matt Berner and Tommy Mangino each had two hits and an RBI. Berner contributed a double. David Arndt also had two hits, while Andrew Pyle had a hit and three RBIs.

Winning pitcher Aaron Madill didn’t allow an earned run in six innings.

In the second game, Berner, Mangino, Matt Lane, Dominick Harrell and Chris Barr each had two hits. Barr had two RBIs, while Mangino, Lane and Harrell had one apiece. Taylor Martin pitched six innings for the win.

“We played about as well as I’ve ever had a team play defensively on the first day of the season,” Brooks said. “Matt Berner (short) and Andrew Pyle (second) were magicians all day.”

The Raiders (2-0) will travel Tuesday to Paola for a 6 p.m. single game.
