More rain expected by midweek

If rainy days and Mondays always get you down, this was a good day to crawl back under the covers — at least until the afternoon.

By 8 a.m. Monday there was about an inch of rain recorded at the 6News offices at Seventh and New Hampshire streets, said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

“We’ll be seeing the rain last through the morning hours, tapering off by about 11,” Sayers said during his morning weather report. “By noontime, it will be dry.”

The high Monday afternoon will be 62, under cloudy skies. Later in the afternoon, it will be mostly cloudy, with winds from the east, about 10 miles per hour.

“The temperatures are starting out not too bad for the day. We’re just not going to warm up too much later on in the day, because of the cloud cover and the moist conditions,” Sayers said. “We’re seeing temperatures in the 50s and 60s.”

One batch of rain came through Lawrence about 10 p.m. Sunday, with skies clearing overnight. Then another system came through about 4 a.m. Monday, bringing moderate and heavy rains.

“The western edge is still back in Manhattan, so, we’re going to take a little while before the rain does push on out of here,” he said. “. . . The only rain is in the central part of the country, where we live.”

The heaviest rains have been in the eastern part of Kansas, western Missouri, Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma, he said.

“We already have about an inch of rain in the bucket so far,” he said. “By the time we’re done, we could have an inch and a half, or maybe two inches of rain. But by noon, the rain will be out of here, with clouds and maybe a little sunshine by the end of the day. But it’s a good soaker for today.”

Monday night will bring partly cloudy skies. Temperatures will bottom out at 50 degrees overnight.

For Tuesday, it will be partly cloudy to start the day, with clouds on the increase later in the day. The temperatures will still be below normal for most of the week, with the highs never getting out of the 70s.

There is a 40 percent chance of rain Wednesday and a 50 percent chance Thursday. The high will be 73 Wednesday and 72 Thursday, with temperatures in the mid 70s for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The lows will be in the 50s through the week.
