Lawrence fiber artist part of K.C. exhibition

An exhibition of work by Lawrence fiber artist Chris Wolf Edmonds opens Thursday at The Source Fine Arts Inc. in Kansas City, Mo.

The show, “Visions of Nature through Fiber,” pairs Edmonds’ work with that of Ellen Kochansky of Pickens, S.C. The exhibition coincides with the National Surface Design Conference.

An opening reception for the show will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the gallery, 4137 Pennsylvania St. A post-conference reception will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. June 8.

Edmonds is a fifth-generation Kansan who graduated from Kansas University. During the 1970s, she became known for her applique picture quilts and was commissioned by the “Saturday Evening Post,” “Good Housekeeping,” “Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine,” the Franklin Mint and others.

Edmonds’ most recent body of work, “Portraits of Trees,” formed a solo show which opened in November 2000 at the Lawrence Arts Center.

“The primary inspiration for my work is life in all its forms,” Edmonds writes in her artist statement. “As an artist and amateur naturalist, I collect the colors and patterns of the world around me and attempt to preserve them in my hand-painted and printed fabrics, wood, pieced designs and books.”

The exhibit continues through June 21. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
