Former Jayhawk Harbour wins Kansas Amateur title

? Casey Harbour of Lake Quivira held off a late charge by Overland Park’s Jay Hepler to win the Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship final, 3 and 2, Sunday at Indian Hills Country Club.

It was the first Amateur title for Harbour, who was the tournament’s fourth seed. Hepler was the 11th seed.

Harbour played for Kansas University from 1999 to 2002. Hepler earned a letter with the Jayhawks in 1994.

After Hepler took a 2-up lead six holes into the 36-hole final, Harbour birdied six of the next 15 holes to take a 3-up lead. He stretched the lead to 4-up after Hepler had a double bogey on the 23rd hole.

Hepler birdied three of the next five holes to go 1-down with eight holes left, but Harbour answered with birdies on the 31st and 33rd holes to regain a 3-up lead.

He clinched the title with a par on the 34th hole. Harbour made nine birdies Sunday after making a total of 10 birdies through his first five match-play matches.
