Telethon needs volunteers

The Shawnee Mission district of the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. needs several volunteers to answer phones and help behind the scenes at the association’s Jerry Lewis Telethon. The broadcast airs from Hollywood with cuts to local segments and will air at 10:30 p.m. Aug. 31 on KCTV, Sunflower Broadband Channel 5. The telethon will raise money to help research, public education and services for people affected by any of 40 neuromuscular diseases. Immediate volunteer needs

  • Volunteers are needed for the Aug. 9 Crosstown Unity Run. They will be stationed throughout the course and at the finish line at Lawrence High School to monitor traffic, direct runners and offer food and water. This is a fund-raising event for Lawrence and Free State high schools’ cross country and track and field teams.   • Douglas County Dental Clinic needs volunteer dental assistants for August. Volunteers will assist dentists with patient care in the clinic office. Various times to work are available Tuesday through Friday. For more information, call 312-7770.
  • Interfaith Caring Neighbors will have one-hour training sessions Aug. 5 for people who would like to help elderly citizens in Lawrence and Eudora. ICAN volunteers help seniors maintain their independence by supporting them with friendly visits, grocery shopping and tasks such as yard work and minor repairs.   • The Kansas Audio Reader Network, a radio reading service for the blind and visually impaired, will be the beneficiary of this year’s Kansas University Alumni Association’s Jayhawk Jog. The event will be Aug. 2 at Shawnee Mission Park, Interstate 435 and 7900 Renner Road in Shawnee. Volunteers are needed to staff food tables and water stations, to act as course monitors and timers and to assist with registration.
