Renegades win two in Oklahoma City

? Lawrence’s Renegades survived 110-degree heat, late rallies by both opponents and an injury to center fielder Ryan Engel while winning their pool Saturday at the Select Six Series youth baseball tournament.

Cal Heinrich was 5-for-8 with four doubles and five RBIs and caught both games in the sweltering heat.

Lawrence defeated Lawton, Okla., 10-8, in its first game. Nick Walters went six-plus innings for the victory.

Engel was 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs and two RBIs.

In the second game, Ryne Jackson (6-1) earned a complete-game victory in a 9-5 victory against Springfield, Mo. The Irish mounted a three-run rally in the sixth before falling short.

“It was a lack of intensity on our part,” Renegades coach Lynn Harrod said of the late rallies. “I’m not trying to make excuses, but it’s doggone hot. It wasn’t the bullpen. We were dragging, but we had enough guts to win it.”

Engel was injured when he ran into the fence in left-center while making a catch.

“It was probably the most unbelievable catch I’ve seen in my life in 20 years of coaching,” Harrod said.

Engel, who will be a senior at Lawrence High, was knocked out in the collision. He suffered a concussion and a knee injury and was taken to Mercy Hospital in OKC. The injury in the fourth inning delayed the game for 30 minutes.

“It shook our entire team up,” said Harrod, whose team plays again at noon today. “We’ll have to see what we can piece together.”
