Holly Green, formerly of Becky’s Day Spa, Lawrence, announced she has opened a new business.

The business is Holly’s at GP Styles, 2201 W. 25th St., Suite C. It will offer hair coloring, massages, facials and waxings.

  • Chris Hutton and Donna Mathena-Menke announced they have added Dean Yee as a partner in their business, Lawrence Funeral Chapel Inc.

Yee is a 1982 graduate of Kansas University with a degree in microbiology. He had previously worked in the cardio-respiratory field at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. Yee also is an owner in Topeka’s China Inn Restaurant, Monograms Etc. and the Bella Salon and Day Spa.

Christopher Storm and Steven Williams of Landplan Engineering, Lawrence, have been licensed by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions, the company announced.

Storm serves as a project engineer for Landplan. He is responsible for engineering stormwater collection, water distribution, street, and wastewater projects for municipal, commercial and residential clients.

Williams is survey crew chief at Landplan, with responsibilities including supervision of field operations for a variety of survey projects.

PilgrimPage Inc., Lawrence, announced it has named Wilson Miner as its new director of interactive development. Miner will be responsible for expanding PilgrimPage’s interactive capabilities and overseeing the development of all client Web projects.

Miner is a Kansas University journalism graduate. He previously had worked at PilgrimPage as an art director and designer.

Becky Twedt, project assistant with the Lawrence-Douglas County Promise, and Mary Thompson, an Americorps Promise Fellow, recently attended the 2003 National Conference on Community Volunteering and National Service in Baltimore.

While at the conference, Twedt and Thompson attended sessions geared for building and sustaining successful Communities of Promise.

Bradley R. Finkeldei has been admitted as a full partner in Stevens & Brand LLP, the Lawrence law firm announced. Finkeldei is a 1999 graduate of the Kansas University school of law.

Finkeldei is also a member of the Lawrence and Kansas Bar associations and the Hugh Means American Inn of Court. He concentrates his practice on business and personal injury litigation, as well as banking, educational and municipal law.

Melodie E. Christal, Lawrence, has been named director of institutional research at Washburn University.

Christal previously served as co-director of Downtown Lawrence Inc.; as project director, SHEEO/NCES Communication Network, State Higher Education Executive Officers, Denver; and as project director and director of administration, National Center for Higher Education Management Systems, Boulder, Colo.

Dr. Deborah Steinberg has been named medical director for the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center. Prior to taking this position, Steinberg worked as a staff psychiatrist at the Topeka Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She earned her M.D. degree from Ohio State University and completed residency training in Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry. Steinberg will oversee all medical services at the Bert Nash Center.

Honors and Awards

CornerBank, Lawrence, announced it has started the Community Cornerstone Award that will recognize volunteer service.

To be eligible for nomination, individuals must: have made a significant humanitarian contribution to Lawrence or Douglas County; live in Douglas County; be 21 years of age or older and have lived in Douglas County for at least five years.

A selection committee comprised of community volunteers will review all nominations and select the award recipient each month.

The city of Lawrence’s Community Development Division of the Neighborhood Resources Department recently was honored by the Kansas City Regional Community Planning and Development office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development with a “Best Practices” award at the regional conference in Kansas City, Kan. The department’s submission was for the “Atherton Court Partnership Project,” an affordable 25-unit single-family development created in partnership with the city, Tenants to Homeowners, and Lawrence Habitat for Humanity.

Margene Swarts, community development manager, narrated a PowerPoint presentation at the conference regarding the project. The city’s submission was one of five recognized. At the awards ceremony, the city’s submission was distinguished as being the “Best of the Best” practices.

Taxpayers, businesspeople, and tax professionals have an opportunity to become an enrolled agent, eligible to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service, through taking and passing an examination demonstrating competence in tax matters.

The test itself, which is administered by the IRS on an annual basis, is scheduled to take place this year Sept. 17-18 in Wichita and Overland Park. Enrollment deadline is July 31.
