Camp runs low on water

? A leak in Osage County Rural Water District No. 2 left the town of Perry — including a nearby camp attended by children with muscular dystrophy — without water part of Friday, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Sheriff’s Office said the leak was fixed Friday afternoon, so most Perry residents had water by the afternoon or evening. Because of water demand, the water tower filled up slowly.

Julie Slack, a director with Chihowa Retreat Center, said water began to run out Friday afternoon and the camp’s taps still were not operating Friday night.

Area families, Oskaloosa Thrift-Way and Lindyspring Drinking Water in Topeka donated water for the 34 campers, and the Kentucky Township Fire Department out of Perry also brought water for hygiene use.

Slack said Friday was the last day for the camp. The campers, all from the Wichita area, would be picked up today.

The Sheriff’s Office did not know how many Perry residents were still unable to get water Friday night but said only those at the end of the pipeline were likely to be affected.
