Dedication of the Dole Institute of Politics won’t happen without a little help from the city of Lawrence.

“City staff has been working with event organizers and providing a variety of services and assistance throughout the event,” City Manager Mike Wildgen said in a recent memo.

Services the city is providing for the event:

• No charge for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical crews standing by at the Lawrence Municipal Airport — the site of a World War II-era aircraft exhibit — and at events on the Kansas University west campus. Typically, the city charges KU for those services for other events, such as basketball games.
• No charge for Lawrence Police Department assistance provided to Kansas University Public Safety.
• No charge for water to fill containers at KU and the airport — organizers hope attendees drink lots of water during what is likely to be a hot weekend.
• No charge for using trash bins at the airport.
• Waiver of the 5-cent-per-gallon flowage fee for fuel used by planes participating in the aircraft exhibit and parade.
• Additional mowing efforts at the airport to provide extra parking for the vintage planes.
• No charge for disposal of waste from portable toilets that will be used at the airport and KU during the weekend.

In addition, repairs to West 15th Street, between Iowa Street and Crestline Road, were completed just weeks before the dedication. The project provides improved access to Crestline, which is a main access to KU’s west campus.

The street project cost $250,000, but Wildgen said city residents were the beneficiaries.

“Fifteenth Street was improved, but that is a public street, not a ‘KU’ street,” he said.

The city’s expense in providing the other services has not been determined, Wildgen said.

“We’ll probably have it figured up a few weeks after the dedication,” he said.
