Bus suggestion

To the editor,

I would like to make two suggestions regarding the Lawrence public transit system.

First, to keep our city beautiful, could waste receptacles be installed beside each bus stop in order to contain the litter that inevitably is left behind when passengers board the bus?

Second, if the expense of maintaining the T is too great for the number of passengers riding to locations in Lawrence, why not devise a few routes to Kansas City and Topeka, where hundreds of our residents drive on a daily basis to work?

Some of these commuters might be grateful to leave the driving to someone else, and this could reduce congestion on 23rd Street as well as consolidate the number of vehicles traveling along K-10 (the Smart Corridor).

Routes could be coordinated to connect commuters with public transportation systems in our neighboring cities, K-Tags could be purchased for the routes using I-70, and commuters could be charged a reasonable fare.

Isn’t it ironic that so many people must work elsewhere to be able to afford to live in Lawrence?
