KC police shoot, kill man carrying grenade

Kansas City, Mo. (ap) — A Kansas City man died early Saturday after he confronted police with a grenade, police said.

Police Capt. Rich Lockhart said officers were called to an area containing several duplexes at 11:20 p.m. Friday on a disturbance call. Officers responded and found a 25-year-old man armed with a hand grenade, police said. Officers negotiated with the man until about 4 a.m. Saturday, when the man walked toward them holding the grenade and police shot him, Lockhart said.

After he was shot the man fell on the grenade. When a police department robotic device tried to retrieve the grenade, it detonated. Lockhart said the man was dead before the grenade went off.

Lockhart said the man, whose name was not immediately released, was in the area trying to reconcile with his girlfriend. Residents in the area were evacuated for several hours during the standoff.

Episcopal diocese elects successor for bishop

Topeka (ap) — The Episcopal diocese covering the eastern part of the state has elected the vice rector of a Dallas church as bishop coadjutor.

Clergy and lay delegates selected the Rev. Dean Wolfe, 47, on Saturday during a special convention at Grace Cathedral in Topeka.

If Wolfe’s election is ratified later this summer by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, he will serve as an assistant to the bishop of the Diocese of Kansas, the Rt. Rev. William Smalley. Wolfe also would take over for Smalley when he retires Jan. 1.

Since 1997, Wolfe has served at Saint Michael and All Angels Church in Dallas. He also serves as chairman of the Missions Committee of the Executive Council in the Diocese of Dallas and as Clergy Convenor for the Central Convocation of the Diocese.

Wolfe is scheduled to be consecrated Nov. 8 in Topeka at the 2003 Diocesan Convention.

The Diocese of Kansas, which stretches as far west as Abilene, has 14,200 parishioners and 51 congregations.
