Raiders take doubleheader from Chanute

The Lawrence Raiders continued to cruise Saturday, taking both games in an afternoon doubleheader against Chanute, 4-2 and 7-2, extending their winning streak to six.

“We’re kind of on a roll right now,” Lawrence pitcher Aaron Madill said.

Madill (6-0) should know. He struck out the side in the fifth inning of the first game and finished with seven strikeouts.

“I was pretty tired,” Madill said. “The fastball really wasn’t there. I really didn’t have anything. I was just throwing it up there and hoping they really didn’t hit it.”

Both Lawrence (26-10) and Chanute (29-13) had six hits in the first game, but the Raiders capitalized with a two-run homer from Taylor Martin in the bottom of the sixth inning. The blast was good insurance; Chanute tacked on another run in the seventh.

“Our pitching has been stepping up, and we’re hitting like we should,” Martin said.

In Game Two, the Raiders banged out six hits in the third innings, including four doubles, to take a 5-0 lead. Four of the those hits came with two outs.

“In that inning, everybody just rolled,” Martin said. “We just tried to put the ball in the play.”

Raider pitcher Blake Dickson (4-0) allowed just four hits.

Lawrence center fielder Derek Bailey said he was impressed with how both pitchers consistently were ahead in the count, making the Raiders’ offensive job a lot easier.

“We only need five runs a game (to win),” said Bailey, who went 5-for-7 with two doubles and a triple in the twinbill. “If our pitchers keep pitching like this, we’ll win 20 games.”

The Raiders will play host to Manhattan in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today at Free State High.
