Peggy Johnson, a financial adviser with American Express, has earned membership in the Circle of Success program and has earned an invitation to the Inner Circle conference. Johnson was a top producer within the company and fulfilled financial planning and client service requirements. Only a select number of advisors are given the distinction. Johnson works in the company’s Lawrence office at 3200 Mesa Way.

Callie Shultz has been named health and safety education coordinator and marketing director for The Douglas County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Shultz earned a master’s degree in marketing in 2003 from Kansas University. She will oversee the planning and development of educational programs, community marketing activities and new programs. Shultz served as a board member for United Way of Douglas County last year.

Dillons announced the retirement of Jean Hegeman who is video manager of the Lawrence Dillons store at 1015 W. 23rd St. She worked for Dillons for 10 years.

Lisa Johnson, Lawrence, completed the educational activity “Become an EPEC Trainer” June 20-22 at St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo. Education for Physicians on End of Life Care is an initiative of the American Medical Associations Institute for Ethics and is supported by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Johnson, who is professionally licensed in Missouri and Kansas, plans to initiate EPEC training in the Lawrence service area this fall. She is admissions coordinator for Southern Care Hospice of Lawrence.

US Bank announced Terri Pippert is the new branch manager at its Sixth Street and Kasold Drive location. Pippert, vice president, has worked for the bank since 1978. She is a licensed agent for U.S. Bancorp Investments, which allows her to offer fixed ammunities and life insurance.

Lawrence-based Scanning America Inc. won a project from Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Bentonville, Ark. Scanning America received a contract to scan and index Wal-Mart’s real estate drawings. There are an estimated 1 million sheets.

The project, which was scheduled to begin in June, is expected to take about 4 months. Scanning America committed nearly 20 employees to the project.

Wal-Mart conducted a national search for scanning vendors before offering a contract to Scanning America, Inc. Terms of the contract were not released.

Steve Cowen will serve as a child and family therapist at Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center. He previously worked as a psychotherapist for the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas, with offices in Emporia and Council Grove.

Rich Godbold, credit administrator at Douglas County Bank, recently completed the 2003 School of Lending Principles in Topeka. The course was offered by the Schools of Banking, which instructs students in the theory and process of lending.

Honors and awards

Emily Johnson, Lawrence, has been named a regional Kohl’s Kids Who Care winner. The Kohl’s Kids Who Care program recognizes the efforts of youths who contribute in special ways to their community.

Johnson, 10, organized “Emily’s Helpful House,” a group dedicated to giving children in grades kindergarten through sixth grade, an opportunity to serve in their community.

Some of the group’s activities include a Valentine exchange with residents at a senior center and decorating a Christmas tree for The Festival of Trees fund-raiser at Liberty Hall. To solicit volunteers, Johnson designed and distributed a brochure about the group.

Johnson received a $50 Kohl’s gift card, $1,000 scholarship for post-secondary education and is eligible to receive one of 10 national $5,000 scholarships. The national winners will be announced in August.

Lawrence Memorial Hospital recently announced the recipients of three nursing scholarships.

Michael Balding received the $3,500 Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship. Balding works on the medical floor at LMH as a clinical associate. Balding plans to attend Johnson County Community College.

Lisa Gladfelder received a $1,000 Naomi Lescher Scholarship. Gladfelder will enter the nursing program at Johnson County Community College. Gladfelder is a clinical associate and unit secretary on the medical floor at LMH.

Kristen Ericson was the recipient of the $1,000 LMH Belot Nursing Scholarship. Ericson is a licensed practical nurse in the LMH emergency department. Her work as a sexual assault nurse examiner has inspired her to go back to school to receive her associate’s degree in nursing.

Coming events

Kaplan Test Prep is sponsoring a forum, “Think About Law,” for anyone considering law school or a career in law. The forum will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 28 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, 500 E. 52nd St., in Kansas City, Mo.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and speak with admissions officers from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Kansas University. There will be a panel discussion of law school admissions officials and career lawyers.

Lawrence Memorial Hospital announced that it will have a ribbon cutting ceremony for the oncology center at 4:30 p.m. July 28.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced area landowners can sign up for the Grassland Reserve Program. The USDA will direct financial resources and technical expertise to help landowners protect and restore grasslands.

To participated in the program, the land must be private and include at least 40 contiguous acres.

Landowners may sign up at the Farm Service Agency in Lawrence, 3010 Four Wheel Drive.
