Team to perform stroke screenings

Lawrence residents who want to know their risk of stroke can be screened starting at 9 a.m. July 25, at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

Life Line Screening of America is sending a team trained in ultrasound to do the screenings, which include a scan for blocked arteries, aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs.

Bone density screening, which assesses the risk of osteoporosis, also will be available.

Screenings last about ten minutes and cost $99 for the vascular screening and $125 for both screenings.

Preregistration is required. Call (800) 643-6188 to make an appointment.

Lifelong Cubs fan turns 113

Dixon — Mary Crombie marked her 113th birthday with familiar optimism about her beloved Chicago Cubs, notwithstanding their 94-year unlucky streak.

“I hope they do well,” Crombie said Monday of this year’s team.

One of the visitors during Crombie’s birthday celebration was 13-year-old Stephanie Rustad.

“Mary held Stephanie when she was a baby,” said Mary Ann Knoll, Rustad’s grandmother and social director at Heritage Square, a retirement home where Crombie lives. “Mary used to tell her that she was 100 years older than she was.”
