Museum facts

To the editor:

There was an inaccuracy in the article about the Douglas County Commission and the Watkins Community Museum of History (J-W, Saturday).

The museum building is owned by the Douglas County Historical Society, not the county. Thanks to the efforts of Raymond Rice and some of his associated attorneys, when the city offices moved out of the building in the 1970s, the nine beneficiaries of Elizabeth Watkins’ will relinquished their interests to the historical society and we became the sole owners. The county regularly gives us money for operating costs and periodically has given separate funds to help with the building maintenance.

This year, a grant from the Ethyl and Raymond Rice Foundation, plus funds from a major bequest, are making possible some significant improvements to the physical structure of the museum. We are grateful not only for the substantial help the county is giving us this year and next toward our operations budget but also for their confidence in and moral support of our new director and the progress the museum is making.
