Eight-year-old riding dirt bike falls off cliff

An 8-year-old boy was taken by helicopter to a Kansas City, Mo., hospital Sunday afternoon after a dirt bike he was riding went off a cliff.

Randall Wingert, Lawrence, suffered possible head, back and rib injuries, a Douglas County Sheriff’s spokesman said.

It was unclear how steep the cliff was. No information was available about where the boy was from.

The boy was wearing a helmet, officers said.

The accident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the area of County Roads 1029 and 458 near the southwest corner of Clinton Lake, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Several other people were riding dirt bikes and all terrain vehicles in the area, officers said.

Sheriff’s officers and Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical responded, and Life Star helicopter was called to transport the injured boy to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

The boy was listed in fair condition Monday night.
