Twins’ relievers torched

Cleveland mops Minnesota on Spencer's blast

? Minnesota received a much-needed quality outing from its struggling starting pitcher, then watched its two best relievers blow a late lead.

That’s the way things are going for the fading Twins.

Shane Spencer hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning to send the Cleveland Indians to a 5-3 comeback victory Sunday.

“Our bullpen came up and didn’t hold it,” Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said. “That normally doesn’t happen, but it did today.”

Matt Lawton, who hit a game-tying homer off LaTroy Hawkins in the eighth and went 3-for-5 against his old club, singled with one out in the 10th against Eddie Guardado (1-4).

Spencer drove an 0-2 pitch into the left-field seats to give Cleveland three wins in four games in this series and hand Minnesota its 16th defeat in its last 22.

“He’s an aggressive pitcher,” Spencer said. “He just missed his spot.”

David Riske (2-1) pitched two innings of scoreless relief, and Danys Baez earned his 20th save in 25 opportunities.

Doug Mientkiewicz had a pair of doubles and an RBI for the Twins, who appeared to be on the way to getting Brad Radke his first victory in nine starts with a 3-1 lead after six.

Oakland's Jermaine Dye, right, runs into Anaheim catcher Bengie Molina during the fourth inning. Dye was attempting to score on a hit by Eric Byrnes, but Molina held onto the ball for the out. Oakland won, 6-5, Sunday in Oakland, Calif.

Casey Blake, 5-for-5 with seven RBIs Saturday, doubled and scored on a single by Victor Martinez in the seventh to make it 3-2.

Radke gave up two runs, five hits and a walk in seven innings. But Hawkins, 5-2 with a 1.83 ERA this year, and Guardado, 20-for-22 in save chances, couldn’t hang on.

“When we get the ball in Hawk’s hands, we don’t think too many things are going to happen,” Gardenhire said.

The Twins have lost seven of eight. They’re just one game above .500 and one ahead of the White Sox for second place in the AL Central.

“Hopefully, we do put our finger on it soon,” Guardado said, “because it’s getting late.”

Yankees 7, Red Sox 1

New York — When Bill Mueller’s homer sailed over the left-field fence in the first inning, the Yankees seemed headed for another long day against Boston.

Instead, Andy Pettitte shut down baseball’s top-hitting team, striking out 10 in eight innings, and Curtis Pride homered in his Yankees debut.

Alfonso Soriano went 3-for-5 with a two-run triple to help the Yankees snap a three-game losing streak and move three games ahead of second-place Boston in the AL East.

Pettitte (10-6) almost was perfect after Mueller’s homer — Boston’s 11th of the series. He retired 16 straight between Kevin Millar’s leadoff single in the second and Manny Ramirez’s one-out single in the seventh. New York was 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the game and 2-for-28 in the series before Sunday.

White Sox 11, D-Rays 3

St. Petersburg, Fla. — As soon as Lou Piniella dyed his hair, Tampa Bay’s winning streak stopped.

Jose Valentin and Joe Crede homered and drove in three runs apiece to back the pitching of Mark Buehrle and lead Chicago over the Devil Rays.

Buehrle (7-10) allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings to win for the fifth straight time since stopping a nine-game losing streak June 16. The left-hander also snapped the Devil Rays’ season-high three-game winning streak.

Piniella, Tampa Bay’s manager, dyed his hair with blond streaks before the game, keeping a promise to change his hairdo if his young, last-place team won three in a row at any point this season.

Valentin hit a three-run homer off reliever Carlos Reyes in the third inning.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 3

Baltimore — Eric Hinske hit two homers, and Chris Woodward singled in the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning as Toronto rallied to defeat Baltimore and avert a four-game sweep.

Hinske, who went 4-for-5 with two doubles, had four homers and 10 RBIs in the series. Greg Myers also homered as Toronto won for only the second time in nine games.

Toronto trailed 3-1 in the ninth before Myers led off with a home run off Orioles closer Jorge Julio. One out later, Hinske tied it with a drive to center.

Juan Acevedo (1-3) earned his first victory with the Blue Jays. Kerry Ligtenberg (0-1) took the loss.

Athletics 6, Angels 5

Oakland, Calif.– Erubiel Durazo hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning as Oakland beat Anaheim to avoid a three-game sweep.

Eric Byrnes, who doubled off Scott Schoeneweis (1-1) to open the inning, advanced to third on Scott Hatteberg’s sacrifice and scored on Durazo’s fly to right.

Scott Spiezio hit a two-run homer on an 0-2 pitch from Oakland closer Keith Foulke to tie it at 5 in the top of the ninth.

Foulke (6-1) got his fourth blown save in 26 opportunities, all in games started by Tim Hudson. The A’s have come back to win all of them.

Ramon Hernandez had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs as the A’s won for just the fifth time in 13 games.

Rangers 5, Mariners 1

Arlington, Texas — Rafael Palmeiro hit his 510th career homer, and Ismael Valdes pitched six strong innings.

Valdes (7-5) was the beneficiary of early run support and snapped a personal three-game losing streak, allowing one run and four hits.

Michael Young also homered off Gil Meche (10-4) for the Rangers, who got a two-run single from Doug Glanville and took two of three in the series.

Seattle All-Star Edgar Martinez hit his 18th homer.
