Central United Methodist Church

Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass., will have an ice cream social at noon Sunday to raise funds for people who need temporary financial assistance.

The event is open to the public.

The church’s Vacation Bible School will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, offering crafts, recreation, snacks and Bible lessons for children ages 2-12.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

The second annual “Backpack Outreach” will be at 8 a.m. Aug. 9 at Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

During this event, backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed. Children must be accompanied by their parents to receive the backpacks.

The church and a number of Lawrence businesses are donating the backpacks and school supplies.

First Christian Church

A topical Sunday School Class for adults is offered from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. each week in the fellowship hall.

The subject of the Faith & Life series this week is “Faith & the Face of Death.”

Larry McElwain will explore the need for faith during the grieving process.

First United Methodist Church

The Rev. David Livingston and his wife, Tracy, will be welcomed during all three worship services Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Livingston is the church’s new associate pastor. He previously served as pastor at Camp Creek and Lancaster United Methodist churches in Atchison County.

The 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday services will also feature “The First Four” men’s quartet of Jamie Shew, Joel Frederick, Ken Pine and Frank Purvis. They will sing “America” and “America, the Beautiful.”

Each service will conclude with “Stars and Stripes” played by organist Dan Abrahamson.

The Staff Parish Relations Committee will be host to a reception for the Livingstons from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 13 in Brady Hall.

Knights of Columbus

No. 1372

The new officers of the Knights of Columbus No. 1372 in Lawrence have been announced for the 2003-2004 fraternal year.

The officers are: Grand Knight John Callewaert, Chaplain (the Rev.) Charles Polifka, Deputy Grand Knight Tony Augusto, chancellor Stephen Smith and recorder Duane Filkins.

Other officers are: financial secretary Dorian Witte, treasurer Ed Mullins, advocate Paul Clark, warden David Walker and guards Michael Vellon and Val Romero.

The Board of Trustees includes Gerald Denning, Robert McGreevey and Duane Boor.

Grand Knight Callewaert has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 22 years, serving as financial secretary prior to his election as Grand Knight. He is retired and lives in Lawrence with his wife, Deanna.

With more than 1.6 million members, the Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal organization.

It provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, the community, families and young people.

Redeemer Lutheran Church

Students in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2700 Lawrence Ave., have collected food and personal items for the U.S. military forces.

Students also have raised money that will be used to buy phone cards and devotional booklets to be sent to those who serve in the military.

Trinity Lutheran Church

The Rev. Cynthia Schnaath, assistant to the bishop for Central States Synod-ELCA Assembly and Resource Center, will preach and lead worship at the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday worship services at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

She will also be a guest at the 9:45 a.m. education hour, as she joins the church’s delegates to the Synod Assembly in reporting on that conference, which was last month in Lindsborg.

The monthly sewing/work day will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A covered-dish meal will be served at noon in the church’s social room.

Women are working on the quilts for Lutheran World Relief.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen dinner served Thursday will be provided by volunteers and servers from West Side Presbyterian Church, 1204 Kasold Drive.
