On “Better Health,” Hurd goes inside the cardiac rehabilitation center at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

“River City Weekly” premieres on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays with encore presentations at 7:30 weeknights, 8:30 weekday mornings and 9 a.m. Saturdays.

Judge sets trial dates in fatal March shooting

Enough evidence exists to put two men on trial on charges related to the shooting death of Lawrence resident Quincy Sanders, 21, a district court judge ruled Tuesday.

After reviewing the evidence presented during the five days of the preliminary hearing, Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin found probable cause to try 22-year-old Tremain V. Scott of Overland Park for Sanders’ murder and 22-year-old Corey T. Robinson of Topeka on charges of aiding and abetting that crime.

The evidence showed Sanders was shot 18 times with three different guns during the early morning hours of March 14 at a duplex near 26th Street and Ridge Court.

Scott’s trial was set for Oct. 20.

Robinson, who faces an additional charge of criminal possession of a firearm, was scheduled to stand trial Sept. 15.

Education

Elementary enrollment less than a month away

Supt. Randy Weseman issued a reminder Tuesday to Lawrence public school students and their parents.

Be advised: Elementary school enrollment is less than a month away.

“We’re in the month where we gear up for school,” Weseman said.

Students and their parents will line up July 30 at their respective elementary schools to pay fees. Information about enrollment and bus routes will be published in the Journal-World in the days prior to enrollment.

The process will be more involved this year than in the recent past because East Heights, Centennial and Riverside schools were closed. Hundreds of elementary students will go to new schools.

The first day of classes for elementary students in the 2003-2004 school year is Aug. 13.
