Athletes of the week

Aaron Madill

Lawrence High

Class: Senior.

Sport: Wrestling.

The week: Madill’s been tough all season, but he turned it up a notch this past week. He improved to 26-0 after winning the 160-pound title at the Blue Valley Northwest Invitational on Saturday. He beat Kansas City Turner’s Nick Figge in the finals, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A. Madill, who’s fourth in 6A, then moved up a weight class in Tuesday’s dual against Free State. With LHS barely leading, Madill earned an 11-7 decision over Kyle Frank, ranked third at 171 pounds, spurring his team to a 37-28 dual victory.

Comment: “If he dictates the tempo of the match, he’s awfully tough to beat,” LHS coach Mark Dulgarian said. “As much as he shoots on people, he frustrates them and then he’s got you.”

Kyle Kelsay

Oskaloosa

Class: Senior.

Sport: Boys basketball.

HT: 6-foot-0.

The week: Don’t try guarding Kelsay without a little scouting. That is, if you try to force him to his right, the left-hander will blow by you on the left, just like he did to opponents at last week’s Tonganoxie Invitational. The Bears went 1-2, but Kelsay was superb, averaging 30.3 points per game, including a 39-point outburst in an 85-60 win against Olathe Christian. He was named to the All-Tournament team and was named most inspirational player. In Tuesday’s 69-53 loss to Perry-Lecompton, Kelsay scored 26 points in the first three quarters.

Comment: “He’s put in a lot of time and a lot of work over the summer to make himself a better ballplayer. His work ethic is what sets him apart,” OHS coach Rod Stottlemire said.
