Bicyclist cited in injury accident

A Lawrence bicyclist failed to yield the right of way Thursday evening and was hit by a car at Ninth and Kentucky streets, Lawrence Police said.

Darrel Edgerton, 32, was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital after the accident, which occurred about 7:30 p.m. Hospital officials said he left the hospital without being released.

Edgerton was going west on the north Ninth Street sidewalk when he failed to stop at a red light, police said.

Alfred Reed, 47, Topeka, was driving west on Ninth Street when he stopped his car at the light. The bicycle and car collided when Reed attempted to turn right onto Kentucky.

Lawrence Police said Edgerton was at fault in the accident and that he would be cited for not having a headlight on his bike.

Arizona official says ‘action taken’ in case

The University of Arizona athletic director released a three-sentence statement Thursday saying “action has been taken” against Wildcat basketball players who took candy from a vending machine last weekend at a Lawrence hotel.

But Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood was mum about specific actions taken because of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

“The University of Arizona takes these matters very seriously,” Livengood said. “We have investigated the situation and have taken action in accordance with NCAA and University policy, rules and regulations. Due to FERPA regulations, student matters of this nature remain confidential, so no further comment will be made.”

Three Arizona players were seen by a hotel guest early Saturday morning allegedly removing about 70 pieces of candy from a vending machine, according to the general manager of SpringHill Suites by Marriott, 1 Riverfront Plaza.

Lawrence Police were called after the guest reported the incident to hotel management.

No arrests were made because an Arizona coach returned to the hotel Saturday and paid for the candy.
