Jane W. Lucas

Services for Jane W. Lucas, 66, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Private burial in Pioneer Cemetery will precede services.

Mrs. Lucas died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Oct. 14, 1936, in St. Joseph, Mo., the daughter of Thornton Michael and Frances (Welden) Vaughn. She earned a bachelor of science in education with highest distinction in 1962 and a masters of arts in education in 1978 from Kansas University.

Mrs. Lucas was a teacher in drama and English for 16 years at Perry-Lecompton High School and was Teacher of the Year twice. She also taught freshman English at KU for four years. She had been a substitute teacher for USD 497 since she retired. She was a member of Buckaroos in St. Joseph, Endacott Society at KU, Jayhawk Society of the KU Alumni Association, Delphi Society, Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Lawrence Community Theatre, Jane Club and Plymouth Congregational Church. She also knitted sweaters for Guidepost Sweater Project.

She married W. Max Lucas on Aug. 11, 1957, in St. Joseph. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Jennifer Wyatt, Lawrence, Sarah Whittington, Salida, Colo., and Amy Blankenbiller, Washington, D.C.; a brother, Michael Vaughn, Bellflower, Calif.; a sister, Johanne Kapfer, Lawrence; and six grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Expressions of Appreciation at Endacott Society, KU Alumni Association, Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn. or Hospice Care of Douglas County, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
