— Eudora High's girls basketball team couldn't overcome its slow start in the Top Gun Invitational.

Gardner-Edgerton bolted to a 14-point halftime lead, then held on for a 56-47 victory Tuesday over the Cardinals.

"Basically we did ourselves in by the way we played in the first half," said EHS coach Cara Kimberlin, whose team fell to 4-7. "We played well in the second half and outscored them. But we put ourselves in position where we had to foul at the end."

And in the end, Gardner-Edgerton's free-throw shooting -- which was far from spectacular overall, as the Trailblazers were just 12 of 30 -- was too much to overcome.

The Trailblazers sunk seven from the charity stripe in the final minutes to claim their sixth victory of the season.

Eudora committed 20 turnovers in the first and second quarters, and Trailblazer Erin Johnson took advantage.

The junior scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half and guided Gardner-Edgerton's pressure defense, which hounded Eudora point guard Michelle Deluna.

Deluna scored a game-high 17 points, but Kimberlin said Deluna pressed when the Trailblazers began pressing her.

"She didn't have a real good first half. She committed some costly turnovers," said Kimberlin, whose team will play Anderson County Thursday at 6 p.m. in Wellsville's Blue Gym. "They were pressing, and she would try to beat them by dribbling out of it, instead of reversing the ball for easy shots."

Junior Lauren Kracl scored 10 of her 16 points in the second half before leaving late because of a sprained ankle, but it wasn't enough for the Cardinals.

"It was too little too late when we finally decided to play like we're capable of," Kimberlin said.
